Cosmetic Dentistry for the Brightest Smile

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009
Ron Mark recently asked:

From Austin Powers’ teeth to those of Angelina Jolie, the way is not so long if you use the shortcut of cosmetic dentistry. If all those years of smoking or drinking coffee have made you grow ashamed with your smile, all you have to do in order to achieve the desired smile is going through several sessions of teeth whitening.

Teeth whitening procedures lighten the color of teeth and do away with stains and discoloration. They are ideal for those who have healthy teeth and gums and want a brighter smile. Patients with yellow tones to their teeth are most likely to declare themselves satisfied with the results. Therefore, unless your teeth are yellow because of use of tetracycline or antibiotics during childhood, you are among the happy ones who can hope in excellent results from dental whitening.

Cosmetic dentistry offers several methods of teeth whitening, one of which will most certainly suit you, too. The first and cheapest one is the common whitening effect toothpaste. Actually, all toothpastes contain gentle polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. However, whitening toothpastes can help eliminate surface stains only and do not contain bleach. None of the home used whitening toothpastes can come even close to producing the bleaching effect you get from your dentist’s office. Whitening toothpastes can lighten your tooth’s color by about one shade. In contrast, light-activated whitening conducted in your dentist’s office, with specific cosmetic dentistry tools, can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter.

Other products you may use in order to achieve the teeth you have always dreamed of are whitening gels and stripes. Whitening gels are clear, peroxide-based gels applied with a tiny brush directly onto the surface of your teeth. Instructions generally require twice a day use for 14 days. Initial results are visible in a few days and they last for about 4 months.

Whitening strips are very thin, virtually invisible strips coated with a peroxide-based whitening gel. You need to apply such whitening strips twice daily for 30 minutes for 14 days. The results are similar to those of bleaching gels. These products contain a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide, the substance your dentist uses in order to whiten your teeth, but the results are weaker than those attained within a supervised cosmetic dentistry procedure are. Furthermore, these over-the-counter products do not benefit from the medical expertise that only your own dentist can provide.

So, let us get down to some serious business: teeth whitening performed within the dentist’s office. There are several procedures that your dentist may use in order to restore your teeth’s’ original white. He or she will use a bleaching substance that will remove the stains of your teeth, laser bleaching or tooth veneers. The first technique involves the usage of a bleaching applied directly to the teeth.

Laser bleaching is a procedure where different concentrations of laser light help turn on the brushed-on bleaching solution, the usual hydrogen peroxide. Touch-ups are possible with your own custom at-home bleaching trays. This instant teeth whitening result costs about three times as much as gel bleaching, but the results are impressive, not to mention extremely fast. It takes about two or three sessions of only one hour in the cosmetic dentistry office in order to have spotless white teeth.

Dental veneers are thin coverings for the outer portion of your teeth. They enhance the appearance, color and shape of your teeth. They are ideal for mending chipped, weakened, discolored or misaligned teeth. The process of using dental veneers on your teeth is rather simple. In this procedure, the dentist first slightly removes the front portion of the faulty teeth. After this, custom-made veneers bonds and fix to that portion of your teeth. Ideally, it takes two sittings with your dentist to complete this procedure.

Filling Materials and Their Use in Cosmetic Dentistry

Monday, July 20th, 2009
IC recently asked:

Dental fillings also known as amalgams are extensively used in cosmetic dentistry, dental fillings as the word implies are put in place in order to fill a cavity in a patient’s tooth or to restore a portion of it. Dental fillings are also very controversial because recent studies have indicated that some of the materials previously used in dental fillings may cause long-term health related problems, some of the materials used today if this procedure are: Gold, porcelain, composite resins, etc.

The controversial use of Mercury:

This is a very controversial topic because there have been studies which show that this particular material used in dental fillings may cause long-term health related problems, according to such findings, people have grown wary of dental procedures and in some extreme cases patients will not look for most needed dental care.

The American dental care Association released their official statement which said that there has been no scientific evidence which shows that amalgams could be potentially dangerous or hazardous to humans, they based such statement in the fact that the amount of mercury used in amalgams is very stable thus it would be very rare for someone to become ill due to their dental fillings. While some people have reported mild allergies these are in no way life-threatening.

Alternative materials used:

In order to reassure patients about the safety of the materials used for a dental fillings dentists are now using composite resins which are not as strong as the original amalgams but provide a more natural look instead of the old metallic appearance. Because composite resins they are not as strong as other materials used in dental fillings they sometimes have to be cemented in order to allow better adhesion.

A very popular material used today in dental fillings and crowns is porcelain. The material used in dental fillings is actually a mixture of porcelain, ground glass and ceramic, unlike other materials porcelain tends to be more durable and will have a more natural look which is what most patients want, the only downside to porcelain is that they’ve may become cracked if they are exposed to prolonged biting pressure, aside from this minor disadvantage porcelain remains the favorite material when it comes to crowns and dental fillings.

A Great Advance in Cosmetic Dentistry

Saturday, July 18th, 2009
Dr. Susan Wells recently asked:

The world of cosmetic dentistry had certainly changed over time. The many advances have all contributed to far more painless, easier and quicker methods of improving the look and feel of your teeth. And the ultimate product of cosmetic dentistry is better than ever. Your teeth can be perfectly straight, spaced exactly right and colored with the exact shade of white they should be.

We all know how much better we feel about ourselves when we know we’re looking our best; when we don’t have attention on any negative aspect of our personal appearance. This is true in business as well as personal relationships.

Some of the reasons people may need cosmetic dentistry include stained teeth, chipped teeth, fanged or crooked teeth or spaces between the teeth.

Fixing any of these problems is now far easier than it ever was before. In fact, many of these can be helped with a painless way to reshape and permanently whiten your teeth called veneers. One type of veneer is called Lumineers.

Lumineers are a kind of porcelain veneer. With these your dentist can painlessly and permanently whiten and align your teeth giving you that great smile. They are also a relatively quick procedure producing dramatic results. Veneers such as Lumineers can change the color, shape or size of your teeth or any combination of those. At times they can even be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment.

Veneers are an alternative to crowns. With crowns a dentist would have to shave off some of your original tooth structure to make room for the placement of the crown; a procedure requiring the use of Novocain. In contrast Lumineers type veneers are very thin pieces of specially shaped porcelain that your dentist glues over the front of your teeth with little or no need for anesthesia. Unlike crowns, your dentist won’t need to remove much of the tooth before putting on the veneer. For the normal veneer your dentist will need to lightly buff your teeth to allow for the very light added thickness of the veneer. Veneers are thin like contact lenses, and will usually only need tooth reduction of 0.5mm to 1.0mm.

The procedure for Lumineers is different than traditional porcelain veneers. It still takes two visits, but there is little to no preparation of the tooth and no need for temporary veneers.

The veneer itself will be created from an impression taken of your tooth or teeth in your dentist’s office. The process of taking this impression is quite painless. You will get temporary veneers to wear until your own veneers are ready. Once your custom veneer has been created from that impression it is glued directly onto your tooth.

Simple, easy, quick and normally less expensive than getting a crown veneers such as Lumineers won’t stain and are a very popular solution for many people looking for that perfect smile. They are strong and durable lasting from ten to fifteen years.

As a note, good communication is needed between you and your dentist to ensure you get the size, shape, fit and color that are right for you. Make sure you ask questions and discuss any concerns. This way you will get perfect veneers and have the smile you have always dreamed of.

Hema’s Austin Cosmetic Dentistry Makeover

Friday, July 17th, 2009
Tejas Patel recently asked:

“In three to four visits and within the course of a few months, we erased years from her face and made her look younger. I could definitely see that she smiles so much more after she got her smile makeover.” – Dr. Tejas Patel

This is one of my favorite smile makeovers that we’ve completed. Hema’s front teeth were very crowded, crooked, and stained from years of drinking tea. She had an amazing spirit and attitude, but when she smiled she would smile with her lips closed. She was very self conscious about her smile. She wanted her teeth to be straighter and whiter.

Our first step after her comprehensive exam was to get her teeth and gums healthier. We accomplished this by treating her cavities with white fillings and treating her gum disease with a deep cleaning. After her mouth was much healthier, we then decided to do 10 Austin porcelain veneers on her top teeth & 6 porcelain laminate veneers on her lower teeth. The desired result would be that her smile would look whiter and straighter. Her teeth would then look symmetrical and uniform in color and shape. We also decided to address the uneven gumline of the front teeth with laser gum contouring.

During one of the initial visits at the Cosmetic Dentistry in Austin we took impressions of her upper and lower teeth and sent those to Microdental Laboratories in California. Microdental used those initial impressions to begin outlining the design for a new smile, by creating a waxup. The waxup serves as a matrix or guide for the temporaries and shows the newly designed smile on a three-dimensional stone model.

We then saw Hema for a preparation visit. During this visit she was fitted with temporary veneers that looked awesome! This gave Hema a preview of her new smile. While Hema wore temporary veneers, our skilled and talented ceramists at Microdental were creating the permanent veneers. On the cementation visit, we seated and bonded the final veneers to Hema’s Austin teeth whitening.

They looked fabulous and she was extremely pleased with the results. In three to four visits and within the course of a few months, we erased years from her face and made her look younger. Her new smile looked so natural for her and she was no longer self conscious about her smile. With each of our smile makeovers and transformations, we always strive to make sure the results look natural for the individual. With Hema, I am confident that we achieved that desired result. You can see it in her new smile! When looking at pictures of her, after her smile makeover, you can see the transformation. You can see how she smiles with ease and shows off her smile, rather than being embarrassed by it. I could definitely see that she smiles so much more after she got her smile makeover.

Cosmetic Dentistry Defined – it Deals With the Appearance of your Teeth

Friday, July 17th, 2009
Jayden Adams recently asked:

Cosmetic dentistry has a very simple definition. It is that branch of dentistry dealing with the appearance of your teeth. It handles the modification of your smile and anything having to do with how your teeth and gums look in terms of the length, shape, color, alignment and proportion. This is made possible with porcelain and composite tooth colored materials perfectly designed to intimately match your tooth structure.

Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, specializes in high-tech modification, “With cosmetic imaging you can see the future of your smile before you begin. Also, I have a personal lab so I can customize your smile with any of those last minute adjustments you desire, instantly.”

Restorative dentistry is the art of reproducing a tooth that has been lost. Porcelain crowns are primarily the most common restoration, however dental implants fit this category as well. “When we send something precious out to be restored we expect it to look like the day we bought it when the work is done.”, explains Dr. Maddahi. He uses the Shade Vision camera to correctly adjust coloring to perfection. With a computerized camera aimed at the tooth the Shade Vision System reads off the variations of hue, value, and color of each tooth to map the shade of the porcelain restoration exactly while saving the reading on the computer screen. “The only way that I am certain that I can get a perfect natural match is with the Shade Vision System.”, Dr. Maddahi explains. “Sitting in my dental chair, you are surrounded by the most advanced dental technology available. Much of these have never before been found in a dentist’s office.”

The word veneer is French in origin and in dentistry means to furnish the tooth with a thin layer of restorative material in order to improve the appearance of the look of a tooth or protect a damaged tooth surface. Veneers are made best from porcelain and have the advantage of very good aesthetics with minimal tooth preparation. It is also easy to correct teeth that are incorrectly positioned with veneers in most cases rather than correcting with braces or even in conjunction with braces.

There are two types of dental veneers; porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Both porcelain and composite veneers may be created in the laboratory by a technician and are thin layers of restorative material with an aesthetic or protective purpose. Composite veneers can also be done in the office in one appointment.

Porcelain veneers are the veneers of choice for several reasons. They have the benefit of correcting flawed teeth, such as making them thicker and straighter, without the use of orthodontics. Sometimes orthodontics is combined with veneers to create the full aesthetic effect. Porcelain veneers advertised advantage is that they are less likely to stain, more durable when bonded to tooth structure and will not fracture like composite veneers. Dr. Maddahi says, “Color, shape, form, and alignment are all possible with porcelain veneers. But most notably porcelain veneers are the cosmetic dentist’s veneers of choice because they create a very life-like appearance due to their luster and translucency, which is unachievable with composites.”

Dr. Kourosh Maddahi, has been specializing in creating beautiful, natural smiles for 20 years and is located in Beverly Hills at 436 N. Roxbury Drive, Suite 202 and can be reached at 310-888-7797.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure: Bonding

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Dave Stringham recently asked:

A bonding is a composite resin that is used as an alternative to amalgams and veneers. This is an excellent cosmetic option for those patients who do not want the look of silver in their mouths and do not want the expense of veneers. Bondings can be used on teeth that are decayed, cracked, or stained.

Procedure

This cosmetic dentistry procedure is usually completed in one visit. The first step is to remove the decayed or unsightly portion of the tooth. The tooth is then etched with a liquid or gel and a bonding agent is then applied. This will allow the composite resin to be placed in the prepared tooth. The resin is then trimmed and polished, leaving you with a beautifully sculpted, natural-looking restoration.

Bonding Durability

Although composite resins are cosmetically pleasing and easily placed, their durability is not as strong as other types of restorations. These resins typically last from 4-7 years before they begin to chip and wear away. When this happens, the restoration will need to be replaced.

Cerec and Its Use in Cosmetic Dentistry

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
IC recently asked:

Technology has visibly changed everything around us, cosmetic dentistry is not an exception, today we are going to analyze a system used for restorations, this system is called CEREC, this term stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetics Ceramics. Dental restoration used to be extremely difficult due to the fact that most of the restoration work was pretty inaccurate and every calculation was done using instruments which might not have been the best for the job, this is where technology has changed everything, using the CEREC technology dentists are able to create crowns and veneers with amazing precision.

CEREC technology uses 3-D imaging, CAD, CAM and other proprietary software in order to determine the dimensions of each dental replacement. The following are some of the advantages of using CEREC in cosmetic dentistry:

Duration of the procedure:

Using this technology patients are in need of crown or veneer replacements can have the entire procedure done in just one visit, cosmetic dentists who don’t use this technology will usually end up wasting time because they need to measure the replacements in order to create new ones, this is something that can’t be done in just one day without the use of technology.

Decreased discomfort and pain:

Due to the effectiveness of this technology the amount of injections and drilling is reduced to a minimum, in just one sitting a cosmetic dentist is able to get all the information needed to create replacements without putting the patient through any discomfort.

Materials used in replacements:

Once the replacements have been measured the creation and veneers and crowns is very easy and fast, automatic machines are able to create top-quality and custom-made replacements using the best materials available today such as ceramic, porcelain and other composite resins in virtually no time.

The CEREC technology is so efficient that after a patient’s mouth has been scanned, the data gathered is analyzed by a computer, processed and finally a machine is able to create the replacements within four to 20 minutes instead of having to wait several days to have the work done, this is precisely the reason why they use of this technology has been widely accepted by cosmetic dentists across the globe.

Look Up Procedures on Cosmetic Dentistry in Wirral

Friday, July 10th, 2009
Johnathan Brook recently asked:

When you are searching for professionals who are practicing cosmetic dentistry in Wirral, there are two effective ways to do this. First, you will be able to locate a dentist when you are living within the area. On the other hand, you can turn to the Internet which is the more convenient option. When you choose to find dentists over the web, you will be provided with a long list of cosmetic dentists. The great thing about doing your search online is that you will be provided with a background information on each of the professionals. This is something which you will seldom get when you search through the traditional method, which is flipping through directory pages.

The cosmetic dentistry in Wirral make sure that your dental needs are catered to properly. Dental professionals provide you with cosmetic services such as dental implants, Invisalign braces, teeth whitening, veneers, and cerec replacement. There are also advanced surgical implant procedures like sinus lifts and bone grafting. Through dental veneers, you will be able to turn your shy smile to dazzling white. Veneers are also appropriate for you when you want to cover up the gaps between your teeth. If you have crooked teeth, you can straighten them out with Invisalign braces. These are clear and comfortable aligners which you can remove from your mouth easily. The great difference of this new dental treatment is the opportunity to avoid mouth irritation which is usually caused by metal or wire braces.

Another common cosmetic dentistry procedure which is offered at Wirral is endodontics. This is a dental treatment which clears out the root canals of your teeth. To be more specific, the therapy of endodontics refers to the removal of infection from your infected teeth. The therapy is done within the root canals. Through this treatment, you will be able to make sure that you won’t be experiencing toothaches anymore. To assure you that the process will not be painful, your gums will be applied with local anesthesia.

Another common dental treatment is implants. When you are searching for dentists on Liverpool dental implants, you can also do your search over the Internet. Dental implants is considered as among the latest development within the dental technology. This procedure is suitable for you when you have missing teeth and you want to fill out the gap. Dental implant is also appropriate for you when you want to secure your loose denture. In order for you to make sure that the process is not that painful, find dentists who are experts with this type of treatment.

Liverpool dental implants are done without ruining your existing natural teeth. The end result of this cosmetic procedure is admirable, enabling patients to gain more confidence. In order for the implant to work well, the dentist will set up a socket. This will accommodate the implant which fuses with your jawbone as time passes. After the first procedure, the dental implant is prepared for restoration. This will allow the proper placement of the bridge, denture, or crown. When you choose this type of cosmetic dental procedure, you will be able to smile confidently.

Endodontics and Its Application in Cosmetic Dentistry

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
IC recently asked:

When people talk about endodontics they usually link to this particular treatment to a painful experience, this used to be the case before technology stepped in, the most common procedure done in endodontics is the root canal. These steps involved in with developed therapy require that dentists to make incisions in the affected tooth in order to eliminate infections which have reached the pulp.

The word endodontics comes from the Greek “endo” which means inside and “odons” which means tooth, in cosmetic dentistry the use of endodontics is required if the decay of a tooth is quite severe in other words, if the decay has gone from the enamel to the dentin and ultimately into the pulp conventional cosmetic dentistry procedures may need to be pushed back until this therapy is complete. Teeth which have decayed and have developed a darker dentin should be treated before any cosmetic procedure is done.

If the pulp of the tooth becomes infected then root canal therapy is required, in order to prevent future outbreaks and infections qualified dentists use laser technology in order to disinfect the area and eliminate bacteria, then the area is filled and sealed. This procedure effectively prevents complications at the root and pulp level.

While many general dentists prefer to refer such procedures to specialized dentists in the field, most general dentists are qualified to perform general endodontics work, this is also the reason why most root canals are performed by general dentists.

Other procedures which are also done through endodontics are drainage and internal tooth bleaching, as previously described this procedure is done to patients whose teeth have darkened due to decay of the dentin or any other soft tissue.

Even though the root of the procedure is relatively painless when done properly most people will usually refer to it according to its general stereotype which is but one of extremely painful operation. Regardless of the many stereotypes this operation may be tagged with it is a necessary step in order to prevent serious infections and future complications which may become truly painful.
